What is MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® and why
are transparency and traceability vital criteria for MADE IN GREEN?

MADE IN GREEN at a glance

MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® is a traceable product label for all types of textiles and leather items that have been produced in environmentally friendly factories and at safe and socially responsible workplaces. Furthermore, the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® label gives consumers the certainty that the textile or leather product is made from materials tested for harmful substances.

Transparency and traceability as vital criteria for brands

OEKO-TEX® developed MADE IN GREEN in 2015 with the aim of making the textiles sector

• more transparent

• more socially fair

• and more sustainable (greener)

Because brands can only check conditions when they know the production sites where their items have been produced.

So transparency is the first vital step in a more sustainable textiles sector.

Production sites: social and environmental problems in the supply chain

At the production sites themselves, OEKO-TEX® analyses where in the supply chain the social challenges and environmental problems are the greatest. For OEKO-TEX®, it is important that the manufacturing sites are checked for:

• socially acceptable working conditions and

• occupational health and safety.

So items labelled MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® must come from a STeP by OEKO-TEX® certified manufacturing site. Processes with the greatest environmental impact are so-called wet processes. For this reason, OEKO-TEX® aims to ensure with MADE IN GREEN that the environmental impacts of these processes are as small as possible. This means that the wet chemical processes for MADE IN GREEN must also be STeP certified.

MADE IN GREEN: the benefits in a nutshell

  •  The MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® label focuses on the processes and not on the fibres
  • Many end consumers are probably not aware that using organic material in the textile chain does not automatically mean that the end product is organically certified.
  • The MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® label is therefore not directly representative of organic or recycled products, but rather applies to all types of materials and highlights their production conditions on site. It can thus be used for items made from synthetic components as well.
